Seeking your opinion!

I know that I'm not the only one who occasionally thinks about the products we lather our skin in daily and hope that we are doing our body good.  With the thousands of competitive skin care companies out there we expect to get great quality and also the results they promise to give.  We trust them in protecting our health and hope they would never endanger it with harsh chemicals, or even cancer causing ingredients.  So what I want to know from you is how many of us actually investigate on these products? Do you care how it was made and tested? Or if it is chemical free, allergy tested, dermatologist approved, non-comedogenic? Or perhaps you just care about it being fragrance free? So please share with me in the comments some of your skin care requirements! I’m excited to see if we share the ideals. And for those of you that never thought twice about your skin care products please comment on that!

To break the ice I will go first and share my personal needs and hopes I expect in my skin care products to deliver.

* First of all I love and feel good about using products that are made as natural as they can be. Using the purest, chemical free, ingredients that benefit the skin and your overall health.

* My skin tends to be on the dry side, so oil free products are not a concern. Although I do prefer the moisturizers to be light in weight because I believe heavy ones will weigh the skin down over time.

*I also don't mind fragrance in the product as long as it natural and from the active ingredient. I purposely stay away from unscented products because to get that way they chemically treat it to remove any scents.

*I also look for the companies that are environmentally conscience in the creation of their products, NEVER test on animals, and try to do good for our world.  I would like that to be one of their main focuses of profit instead of the selfish greed of money.

Natural and Local.

I use Human Nature a local brand here in the Philippines that use all organic materials. Not only am I being good to my body but I am also helping the local farmers. And of course no oil and unnecassary is used to import it, its all local.

Emily, it sounds like we have the same skin type and product concerns. Ever since my mom was diagnosed with cancer, I've tried to be more health conscious about the products that I use. I try to use products without parabens. Unfortunately, the products that are "good" for us are a lot more expensive than the others. ("Good" meaning chemical free.) Anyone know of a make-up line/ skin care line that is chemical free AND is reasonably affordable?

I like chemical free, organic and natural products that give me noticeable results.. It's hard to find the right products, as my skin is very sensitive and on the dry side.. Always searching for something even better, so would love to hear some ideas from you!:)

I do not purchase that many skin care products. I stick to a good shower soap and call it good. I like fragrance, do not like animal testing, prefer natural and something that is affordable!

Having had two surgeries now to remove basil cell carcinomas from my face....you might say I'm very careful about what I put on my skin. Most sunscreens cause breakouts for me so finding a good one that won't cause secondary problems and still look natural are the way to go for me. No animal testing, no fragrance and comedogenic please! Ultra sensitive skin needs special handling.

I like products that exfoliate and moisturize but I also have concerns about chemical ingredients that might be harmful not just to me, but to the environment. I definetely want products that are not tested on animals as well. I have once been to a facility where animals were being tested on and I never want to see another! I am also interested in products that keep skin looking young.

i have never used much makeup, but as i get older i am more concerned with keeping my skin moisturized and that that moisturizer has some UV protection. when i find something i like, i stick with it forever :) i like knowing products are natural, but typically don't have the time to reserch it with a busy family and schedule.

Hey Emily~ I used to model for Skinn Cosmetics at ShopNBC and would get several products for free or half off so I have fallen in love with them. Dimitri James knows it all and has been in the cosmetics industry for forever! They are chemical-free, very advanced in technology, and the products work better than any others I've used and feel great. Plus the daytime moisturizer smells like vanilla, and the nightime cleanser smells like orange peel and I looooove those scents! ;) All natural too. :)

As a holistic wellness educator and practitioner, I can't stress enough the importance of what you put on your skin. It is our biggest organ and things applied to your skin are absorbed into your whole body. I opt for the most actual natural (and not just labeled "natural") and organic that I can find. Which tends to mean co-op shopping or local organic manufacturers. I recommend www.annadvorak.com/skincare/
She is local (Mpls), uses organic ingredients and is reasonably priced (very well priced for quality of product).

My biggest struggle would be products that help combat acne. I have very oily skin so sometimes products that are marketed for us who have oily skin, dry our skin so bad it starts to crack and peel! I try really hard and go through many products to find one that doesn't give me acne but doesn't dry my skin like leather.

I never knew that unscented products used chemicals to remove their scents. It makes sense because chemicals are needed to remove caffeine from coffee. I do like make up that feels fresh and helps my skin look younger. I wish I could find a peel off mask (which I never peeled off, but washed off instead) because it really made my wrinkles disappear. The one I used is no longer available.

As you know Emily, I have been very strict about trying to live a non-toxic lifestyle. It was 12 years ago when I watched Kelly Preston on Oprah. She explained how her son almost died as an infant from the chemicals in their new carpet. She really inspired me to begin using non-toxic household cleaners. This led to looking at all the ingredients I put on my body, including skincare, make-up, lotions, body wash, nail polish...everything. The list can go on and on! I love that you are promoting a chemical-free lifestyle. I truly believe it has contributed to many diseases/cancer that are running rampant in our world today. We need to spread the word and inspire woman and men that they can be even more beautiful and healthier with better quality products. I personally have been loving One Love Organics. Amazing company.

I agree, I prefer using products that are natural and safe. I am also a big fan of time saving products. With an infant, I don't have time to wash, tone, exfoliate and moisturize in 4 separate steps.

I pretty much use VERY basic products for skincare. I have also been using less and less make-up and using sunblock as my morning moisturizer. I didn't know that scent-free meant that chemicals were added. That seems a little nuts! I like the chemical free lifestyle too. Sometimes it can be challenging finding it though! And like Noelle said, it gets expensive!

With so many natural ingredient products out there I am definitely buying more products keeping that in mind. From makeup to skincare I have so many options at Sephora, it's great.

As of now my skincare products are mostly natural ingredients. I tend to use Ole Hendriksen, Boscia, Fresh and Origins lately. It gets hard because there are different qualifications to what sales companies consider natural.

It seems that the makeup products in brands like Tarte, Josie Maran, and Korres are getting better in their quality. But, there are still some makeup products like my waterproof eyeliners that I use without regard to their ingredients because I like the way that they work.

For natural body care or fragrance Fresh or LaVanila are some good options too.
This is a great topic Emily, keep em' coming.
